It’s not often our charitable efforts allow us to get hands on and enjoy instant results, so Team City Furniture jumped at the chance to join the Habitat for Humanity Women Build. With about 50 Associates, friends, family, and even a special customer in tow, we arrived at the Sunrise construction site on a sunny April morning, eager to help build a home and learn some new skills.
The Habitat for Humanity team quickly got us organized and up to speed, and the majority of us were assigned to lay shingles on the roof. Working alongside the future homeowners, volunteers, and fellow coworkers, we near completed the roofs on three homes that day, hammering one shingle at a time. The remainder of the team worked diligently underneath us, blocking kitchens to set the framework for cabinetry.
At the day’s end, we were exhausted and sooty—and completely overwhelmed with a sense of pride and accomplishment. We’d like to thank Habit for Humanity for showing us valuable and safe construction skills, and we’re looking forward to the next one.
Women Build is Habitat for Humanity’s program for women who want to learn construction skills and build homes and communities. This program brings together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions of women and children worldwide. No experience is necessary, and men are welcome to join too!
