Every story has a hero. The Pink Pumpkins got their start with Doreen Koenig, mother of CEO Andrew Koenig and our “CITY mom.” She was always known for her philanthropy, and one of her biggest causes was ending breast cancer, long before she was diagnosed in 2015.
As Doreen reached the end of her brave battle, she had the idea to give out thousands of Pink Pumpkins buckets for Halloween, filling our community with the color of hope for breast cancer awareness. This year, we’re inviting everyone to be a superhero by visiting a CITY Furniture showroom. Together, we can finally put an end to breast cancer.
Pink Pumpkins was founded to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research, as well as to honor and remember our very own Doreen Koenig. She supported the cause, and was later diagnosed with breast cancer and subsequently lost her life fighting it, so it hits us very close to home. The name Pink Pumpkins comes from her idea to give out pink pumpkin baskets as a way to celebrate the spooky season of Halloween, as well as make people aware of the disease. Today, it is the name for our pledge to do all that we can to find a cure.
Part of what we do is raise money for the American Cancer Society throughout the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The month long campaign is designed to spread awareness so that we can all stay protected and remember the seriousness of the disease. Although we give extra attention to this cause in October, you can make a donation at any time, all year long. The American Cancer Society is on a mission to free the world of cancer, so they fund and perform research, share valuable information, and keep us all informed about methods of prevention. For more than one hundred years, they have been fighting to save lives, so we partner with them to lend a helping hand. We are also one of the sponsors of several Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks. The purpose of this event, similar to October’s awareness month is to raise funds, keep everyone safe, and help ensure we stay vigilant in our prevention efforts.
Pink Pumpkins is one of our initiatives under our 5% Giving Pledge. The Giving Pledge is our commitment to give back 5% of our annual profits. Because breast cancer has a huge impact in our community and was a huge priority to our CITY mom, Doreen, we decided to make it part of our focus.
